Skylake Intel HD Graphics Family, Processors and new Macs & Hackintosh

Last week, Intel has released two new Skylake-S processors which are Intel Core i5-6600K and Intel Core i7-6700K. Other locked processors such as i5-6600, i5-6500, i5-6400 can also be found.

Now even more 6th Gen Intel Core processors have been revealed such as Intel Core i7-6600U, i7-6500U, i5-6300U, i5-6200U, i3-6100U, Pentium 4405U, Celeron 3955U, Celeron 3855U, according to the FanlessTech.

So first I would like to post some detailed information about Skylake’s integrated graphics, aka Intel Gen 9 Graphics.

Intel HD Graphics

PCI Hardware ID: 0x8086190E
Processor series: Braswell
Notes: Braswell processors are upgraded version of previous Bay-Trail series.

Intel HD Graphics 510

PCI Hardware ID: 0x80861902 0x80861906 0x80861913
Processor series: Skylake Pentium and Celeron
GT Level: GT1, 12EUs

Intel HD Graphics 515

PCI Hardware ID: 0x8086191E
Processor series: Skylake-Y series (New name from Intel: Core M)
GT Level: GT1.5, 18EUs

Notes: This is likely the upgraded version of Broadwell Core M processors’ Intel HD Graphics 5300. The next generation of Retina MacBook may probably use this graphics card.

Intel HD Graphics 520

PCI Hardware ID: 0x80861916
Processor series: Skylake-U series
GT Level: GT2, 24EUs

Notes: You may consider HD 520 as an upgraded version of Haswell’s Intel HD Graphics 4400. (i7-4500U, 4600U, i5-4300U, 4200U and others use HD 4400.)

Core i7-6600U, 6500U, i5-6300U, 6200U, i3-6100U will use this integrated graphics card, the maximum frequency may vary though.

Intel Iris Graphics 540

PCI Hardware ID: 0x80861926
Processor series: Skylake-U series
GT Level: GT3, 48EUs

Notes: You may consider HD 540 as an upgraded version of Haswell’s Intel HD Graphics 5000 or Broadwell’s Intel HD Graphics 6000.

It is possible that the new MacBook Air use this integrated graphics card. And I guess processors such as i7-6550U, 6650U, i5-6350U, 6250U may have this card integrated. (JUST GUESS)

Intel Iris Graphics 550

PCI Hardware ID: 0x80861927
Processor series: Skylake-U series
GT Level: GT3, 48EUs

Notes: You may consider HD 550 as an upgraded version of Haswell’s Intel Iris Graphics 5100 or Broadwell’s Intel Iris Graphics 6100.

It is possible that the new 13inch Retina MacBook Pro use this integrated graphics card.

Intel HD Graphics 530

PCI Hardware ID: 0x80861912 0x80861917 0x8086191B
Processor series: Skylake-H series, Skylake-S Series (desktop processors such as Core i7-6700K, i5-6600K, etc.)
GT Level: GT2, 24EUs

Notes: You may consider HD 530 as an upgraded version of Haswell’s Intel HD Graphics 4600.

This will be the common integrated graphics card among the new Skylake-based laptops and PCs.

Intel Iris Pro 580

PCI Hardware ID: 0x80861932 0x8086193B
Processor series: Skylake-H series
GT Level: GT4e, 72EUs

Notes: You may consider Iris Pro 580 as an upgraded version of Haswell’s Intel Iris Pro 5200 or Broadwell’s Intel Iris Pro 6200.

It is possible that the new 15inch Retina MacBook Pro will use this integrated card. Besides Iris Pro 580 have 128MB eDRAM.

Intel HD Graphics P530

PCI Hardware ID: 0x8086191D
Processor series: Skylake Xeon
GT Level: GT2, 24EUs

Intel Iris Pro P580

PCI Hardware ID: 0x8086193A 0x8086193D
Processor series: Skylake Xeon
GT Level: GT4e, 72EUs
Notes: You may consider Iris Pro P580 as an upgraded version of Broadwell's Intel Iris Pro P6300 or P6200.

To sum up, Apple may probably use

Intel HD Graphics 515 for new Retina MacBook;

Intel Iris Graphics 540 for new MacBook Air;

Intel Iris Graphics 550 for new 13inch Retina MacBook Pro;

Intel Iris Pro 580 for new 15inch Retina MacBook Pro.

For Hackintosh users

Apple may NOT support Intel HD Graphics 530 and other integrated graphics OOB, just like removing support for Intel HD Graphics 4600 in OS X Yosemite.

However maybe we can still use FakePCIID.kext to make the HD 530 work.

In addition, considering Apple has raised up the minimum DVMT-preallocated memory (See Intel HD Graphics 5500 Guide I wrote), we may still have to modify the BIOS settings to change the DVMT value to >= 64MB to make our graphics card work.

Anyway, who knows? Everything will be clear after Apple release the OS X El Capitan with Skylake processors and Skylake Graphics cards supported.

I will keep updating this post. Thanks for your following in advance. :)
